Kaname is the head of the Kuran family. He is the oldest ancestor of his vampire clan. He is a pureblood vampire. Purebloods are vampires who have never married or produced an offspring with a human or a lesser vampire. They either marry another pureblood, or they marry within their family. In doing this, they remain strong and powerful. Purebloods never grow old after they’ve reached a certain age and never die. The only thing that can slay them is an anti-vampire weapon. His true age is estimated at 10,000 years old.

He embodies the eldest son of Juri and Haruka Kuran. When their son Kaname was born, Rido, their older brother, took the baby and used its blood as sacrifice to awaken their family’s oldest ancestor whose name was also Kaname. However, upon awakening, his body was unstable, thus he took the body of the first baby of Haruka and Juri. So even if they are his parents, they are also his descendants. He loves his parents but not in a cute way that a child should. As their ancestor, he is very protective of them, even as a child, which his parents don’t approve of.

He has a little sister who was born a few years after him, Yuuki. He loves his sister very much. As a child, he liked holding his little sister in his arms and cherished every moment she would try to hold his finger with her whole hand. He also enjoyed the moments when she would sit on his lap and kiss him to get the energy she needed as a vampire, because he liked giving it to her. He cherished these moments of closeness. Even as a small child, only Yuuki could read his emotions and make him genuinely happy. So growing up, Kaname became even more protective of his little sister.

Yuuki is everything to him. He did everything to make sure that she lived in a safe environment. He built a school with the help of her adoptive father, where vampires and humans could live in harmony. He sacrificed his time, childhood, blood and happiness to ensure she’d be safe, even if he was far from her. Kaname would never hesitate to use, manipulate or kill any vampire or human who threatened Yuuki’s happiness and safety. With Yuuki, he is very kind, gentle and warm. Yuuki was Kaname’s happiness and his only weakness.

He is not an emotional person, unless it has something to do with Yuuki. He is usually very calm and rarely shows anger in his face. Although he has a calm demeanor, his presence and his manner of talking and conducting himself are very authoritative. He treats everything in life like chess. He rarely shows his true emotions and calculates every move he’d make. He also treats most of the people around him as chess pieces, thinking of how to manipulate them and use them for his benefit and for Yuuki’s benefit. He has friends around him and people whom he treats as family, but he never shows any affection to them. In fact, most of the time, he acts like a well-mannered jerk in front of them. But he would do anything to protect them, even if his actions would make them hate him. It takes a lot to gain his trust and his friendship.

He used to be the dorm president of the Moon Dormitory of their school. He was very strict in imposing disciplinary measures with the vampires. He punished anyone who would disobey the rules of the school.

Anti-vampire weapons can only be wielded by members of the Hunter’s association and the members of the Kuran Family. Because of this, Kaname can wield any anti-vampire weapons, although he prefers wielding a sword.

As a pureblood, he has lots of powers. He has the ability to control the will of even the noble vampires but has never used it, thus he earned the respect of his peers. He has the ability to heal himself infinitely and quickly, unless the damage was caused by an anti-vampire weapon to the head or heart. He has the power to absorb any ability and power of the person whom he drank blood from. He has the ability to turn parts of his body into weapons. Kaname also has Telekinesis and can erase memories. He can create familiars which take on any shape, mostly using bats and a wolf to watch the surroundings, convey messages. He used his familiars to watch over Yuuki, to prevent her from leaving a certain area, to talk to her and to carry her to any location he pleases.

He cares greatly for the humans and their safety. Early in his life, he would sit for days trying to figure out ways to build weapons to help the humans defend themselves from vampires. For years, he fought his own race to ensure the continuity of the human race. Because deep inside, he thinks that purebloods shouldn’t be so arrogant, and humans did not deserve to live in the same planet that they do.
